Hyderabad: When the Telangana state is reeling under water crisis, the government has decided to hike drinking water charges by three times with immediate effect in all municipalities, excluding GHMC.In most of the urban local bodies (ULBs), the municipalities collect fixed amount as water charges every month.

As a result of this hike, households which have individual tap connections and were paying Rs 30 per month so far will now have to pay Rs 90 per month. The charges for white ration card holders have been increased from Rs 10 to Rs 30, revealed a source to The Hans India.

According to officials, this decision was taken to help the ULBs generate more revenue and meet the expenditure incurred on development of the local bodies. Instructions have been sent to all the municipalities to display the details of houses which have tap connection and the status of the payments on their websites.

The sources further said that charges for new tap connection have also been increased to Rs 3,600 from Rs 1,000.

In apartments, consumer charges would be collected ranging from Rs 400 to Rs 1,000 per month depending on the number of flats, pipe sizes used and the installation of the water taps. Deposit fee for giving tap connection in the multi-story buildings has been increased from Rs 40,000 to Rs 1 lakh.

As per the MAUD department guidelines, every municipality would have to adopt a resolution on increasing water charges in the municipal council general body meeting and forward the same to the state Secretary for final approval.

The newly-constituted Nagar Panchayats have also been asked to follow suit. Officials said that majority of the ULBs could collect only 50 per cent of the revenue targets set from water charges in 2016-17 due to political intervention and corruption.
