Hyderabad: The Bharatiya Janata Kisan Morcha (BJKM) on Saturday asked the government to rescue farmers by announcing contingency plan, in view of several mandals facing severe drought-like situation.

In a letter addressed to Agriculture Minister Pocharam Srinivas Reddy, the BJKM State president G Madhusudhan Reddy asked the government to come to the rescue of farmers, who were facing drought-like situation in the entire State.

He pointed out that owing to depletion of groundwater resources during this summer, not only crops weathered out, but also the farmers were selling away their cattle at much lesser price. He also asked the Minister to extend help to farmers of red chillies on par with farmers of red gram, whose stock was procured by the government.

Reddy told the Minister that in Rangareddy district alone scores of mandals were facing drought-like situation. He lamented that both the cattle rearing farmers and horticulture farmers were facing tough situation due to shortage of water.

Reddy brought to light the involvement of middlemen in the markets, who were earning ten folds after buying produce from farmers. He demanded that the government provide facilities like cold storages and ware houses inside markets.
