Hyderabad: The training session aimed at educating the farmers in the maintenance of polyhouses here on Saturday descended into chaos. The session, which was held at the Horticulture Training Institute, witnessed the farmers protesting against non-payment of subsidy.

The farmers complained that the officials had failed to give a satisfactory reply to their queries. The officials had even tried to persuade the farmers to participate in a felicitation function to thank the government for giving free power to them.

About 50 farmers from villages near Moinabad and Chevella, who have taken to poly-house farming, poured out their woes. They complained that though they had taken the lead and adopted polyhouse farming three years ago, they had not been given the subsidy.

Shivanand, a farmer, explained that the farmers had spent huge money in the hope that they would get subsidy, but they were disappointed. “We borrowed heavily from banks, after mortgaging the farmlands in the hope that government would release subsidy.

Some of us took loan to the tune of Rs 18 lakh, as the government promised 75 per cent subsidy. But the government had not so far paid the subsidy and we were forced to Rs 2.5 lakh towards interest to the banks,”

he said. L Venkatram Reddy, Commissioner of Horticulture, who had no answer to explain the delay in release of subsidy, said gerbera flower cultivation by the farmers had turned out to be a disaster as the price for the produce crashed.

He suggested that the farmers cultivate capsicum, cucumber, leafy vegetables, tomatoes, cauliflower and coriander. However, farmers claimed that they were not facing losses because of cultivation, but prime issue was release of subsidy.

An argument ensued over this issue and the programme came to an end abruptly. Even as the Commissioner left the hall, the farmers continued to argue with other officials, demanding explanation for delay in release of subsidy.
