Congress shifts Dharna Chowk battle to Tank Bund

Hyderabad: Congress leaders including Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) chief N Uttam Kumar Reddy and party workers were arrested by the police when they tried to stage a 'Satyagraha' near Dr B R Ambedkar’s statue at Tank Bund on Monday. The leaders who were protesting against the State government’s decision to shift ‘Dharna Chowk’ from Indira Park were shifted to various police stations and were released later.

Says the Chief Minister has completely snatched away the freedom of people to express their dissent against the policies and decisions of the government

The police evicted the leaders including former ministers Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, Mohammed Ali Shabbir, D Nagender and former MPs V Hanumantha Rao and Anjan Kumar Yadav, who launched Satyagraha at the statue, citing lack of permission for the protest. The Congress has intensified its protest over shifting of Dharna Chowk, after all its top leaders held a meeting recently at Gandhi Bhavan. Later, addressing a press conference at Gandhi Bhavan, Uttam Kumar said shifting of Dharna Chowk from Indira Park was a clear violation of freedom of speech guaranteed by the Constitution of India. He said historically even unified AP did not have this kind of restrictions on civil society or the Opposition.

“Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao has completely snatched away the freedom of people to express their dissent against the policies and decisions of the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) government,” he noted. He said people had expected complete freedom after the formation of Telangana. However, Chandrashekar Rao had started treating the new State as his own fiefdom, he added.Leader of the Opposition K Jana Reddy asked why Chandrashekar Rao was afraid of allowing the Congress to hold peaceful protests. Condemning the shifting of Dharna Chowk, he cautioned that even the TRS would be deprived of space to protest, after it was voted out by the people in next elections.

“The TRS government could not suppress the people's voice by arresting Congress leaders and workers. People would retaliate by bringing the Congress back to power,” he affirmed.Earlier, the Congress leaders paid floral tributes to B R Ambedkar and launched their Satyagraha. Former PCC president Ponnala Lakshmaiah, MLAs T Rammohan Reddy, Ch Vamshi Chand Reddy, S A Sampath Kumar and MLC Akula Lalitha were amongst those who were also arrested.
