Five edifices bag INTACH heritage awards
The Indian Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) on Tuesday awarded five historic buildings managements for their efforts to conserve them. The Maulana Azad National Urdu University was also given an award for preserving the rock formations at the university
Hyderabad: The Indian Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) on Tuesday awarded five historic buildings managements for their efforts to conserve them. The Maulana Azad National Urdu University was also given an award for preserving the rock formations at the university. The awards were announced to commemorate World Heritage day which is celebrated on April 18 every year. INTACH Hyderabad had been giving away awards for the past 22 years.
The theme announced by ICOMOS for 2017 International Day for Monuments and Sites is ‘Cultural Heritage and Sustainable Tourism’.“For being a prime catalyst in the revival of cottage industries of the erstwhile Hyderabad State and for its role in showcasing and promoting unique handicrafts of the region, the cottage industries sales depot building richly deserves an award,” read the citation of the award.
The other structures- The Khanqah of Hazrat Shah Khamosh, Mecca Masjid, Ravindra Bharathi, The Central Library, Osmania University, EME War Memorial and the rock formations of Maulana Azad National Urdu University were also given awards.A voice silenced “You will be listening to me speak probably for the last time at the INTACH Awards function. I hope I will find my voice and speak my mind once I free myself from this responsibility,” said Sajjad Shahid, co-convenor, INTACH Hyderabad Chapter.
Every year, Sajjad spoke his mind about the state of the heritage in the State at the awards function but this time he was instructed to refrain from doing so. On the Telangana Heritage bill 2017 that was passed on Sunday he said there appears to be an overlap in understanding heritage.Heritage activists said they would like to see more activists in the heritage committees in the State as well as for the districts. Omim Debara of Apna Watan said the government seems intent on having only officials on the committee but if it really wants to protect monuments it has to involve people in the know of things.
