The four district administrations in the erstwhile united Mahbubanagar have completed all the formalities for converting Girigana Thandas into Grama Panchayats. A total of 214 Thandas having a population of 500 each are expected to become Grama Panchayats.

According to officials, the process of identifying Thandas that qualified for conversion into Grama Panchayats was already started two years ago and during this period the officials had gathered necessary information relating to population, geography, number of lakes, ponds, wells and also analysed the possibilities of income sources, livelihood opportunities and other necessary
inputs.

At present there are 1,148 grama panchayats in all the four districts of Mahbubnagar, Nagarkurnool, Wanaparthy and Jogulamba Gadwal district. With the addition of 214 new GPs, the total number of GPs will increase to 1362.

For carving out Thandas into GPs, the government will have to take into consideration all aspects like population, revenue sources, identification of number of water bodies, highways, extent of agriculture to analyse whether they would be self-sustaining.
