Hyderabad: The alumni of Osmania University have taken pride for being associated with a University, which has a history of 100 years filled with many achievements. While the alumni recalled their association with the University, The Hans India caught up with some of the old students, who settled in their chosen professions. Senior advocate from the city T Sri Ranga Rao, who was a law student during 1986-87, said that the University had given him many experiences.

He said the University was a witness to many agitations, be it on the reservations or the Telangana agitation. He was the general secretary of the students’ union during the agitation on reservations. He said they had called Raj Mohan Gandhi and Vishwanath Pratap Singh to address the students in University. The government should develop the University by providing all the latest courses. There is a need for encouraging the University in sports. He said Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao’s idea to pool up the resources was a welcome one.

Former Vice-Chancellor of Osmania University Prof S Satyanarayana said the Osmania is like a parent to him. “The University had given me name and fame. Right from studying to becoming Vice-Chancellor of the same University was like a great feeling for me. “I was associated with the University for the longest time in one after other posts. It is a top feeling that I was the student and VC of the same University,” said Prof Satyanarayana.

Satyanarayana said he had joined the University during 1976 and 78 while doing MSC. During his tenure as VC he could get Rs 50 crore grant from the Centre and took up various development works. His wish is to see that the University occupies a top place in the country and celebrates 200 years.

Another alumni member M Veera Swamy, who is working in judiciary as a member in the High Court Standing Committee, said that he was the president of the students’ union during 1986-87. “I was very active during the student days participating in the agitation programmes. However, I decided not to join politics and concentrated in sports in boxing. He said the sports should be encouraged in a big way. There is some sporting activity but it is not up to the level of getting medals at national and international level, he added.
