Hyderabad: Bharatiya Janata Party Mahila Morcha on Wednesday charged government hospitals of ignoring crucial issues like maintenance of the maternity ward and poor infrastructure facilities which were resulting in infections leading to the death of pregnant women.

The Mahila Morcha which visited the Sultan Bazar Maternity hospital on Wednesday observed that there was no front desk and inquiry counters to attend on the patients. The hospital which receives hundreds of patients had only two toilets which were badly maintained with stains, moss and no water.

Patients bring water from outside for drinking and bathing purposes. Mahila Morcha said there was no bathing facility for the new born babies. Babies have to wait without a bath for the entire duration of stay in the hospital. The hospital also does not have proper facilities for various medical tests and patients are sent to private hospitals at the last minute before delivery.

They provide one bed on sharing to two or three women with new born babies which leads to infections. Both the visitors and the patients are made wait outside the hospital waiting for their turn for surgery.

They said there was no awareness among the patients on the maternity benefit of Rs 12, 000 which has been promised by the government. They also found that no proper fumigation was taking place at the hospital or the operation theatres.

Following the recent incidents of women dying due to post operation infections, the patients are now being sent for delivery to Nilofer or Osmania hospitals. They further said they had observed that people were sleeping on the floor due to lack of beds.

The hospital is always flooded with 600 patients per day, and around 13,000 deliveries per year take place at the hospital, they said. BJP Mahila Morcha Naga Parimala, Sarala, Pavithra, Yamuna Pathak, Sulochana Bhavani and others visited the hospital and made the observations.
