Hyderabad: The works relating to the suspension bridge across Durgam Cheruvu began on Wednesday with the Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development K T Rama Rao laying foundation stone for the project.

The suspension bridge is being constructed as part of the Strategic Road Development Plan (SRDP) of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) and is expected to ease the traffic problems, especially in the IT corridor.

Talking to media, Rama Rao said with the fast pace of developments taking place in the Hitec City, especially in the IT corridor, it was imperative to have 12-lane roads instead of the present eight-lane roads.

Under the SRDP, there were various proposals to take up more road development works, including flyovers in a phased manner. He asked the Larsen & Toubro to complete the project within 18 months.

He said in the first phase of the SRDP, the area surrounding the Durgam Cheruvu would also be beautified at an estimated cost of Rs 3.5 crore.

A cycling track, yoga centre, skating ring and others would also be built in the area. He said the iconic structure would enhance the connectivity between Banjara Hills and Madhapur Hitec area and would add to the beauty of the State capital.
