Hyderabad: Sharing some enduring reflections that ought to guide in advancing the vision of education, President Pranab Mukherjee said that to his mind, knowledge must pave the way of life; and living must essentially encompass pursuit of the path of learning. From time immemorial the continent of Asia, and South East Asia in particular, opened up novel paths of learning. “Wherever the Buddha traversed, seeds of knowledge sprouted and flourished.

Nalanda, after Takshashila, held the beacon of light high for over a millennium across lands and seas and welcomed drifting seekers of knowledge and provided them a lasting resting place,” he said. The President was addressing the first convocation of the English and Foreign Language University (EFLU) held at Brahma Kumari’s Global Peace Auditorium at Gachibowli on Wednesday. The president said that sustaining and reinvigorating higher education in India as well as in other parts of the world had become a major challenge, especially so in public institutions.

He said challenges existed for such institutions, both from outside and inside. According to the President, four distinct factors like escalation of costs of learning, narrow pragmatics, like market-oriented fast-track skill acquisition, as the sole goal of learning, the allure of invasive dominant communication systems, depleting attention span and the corrosion of trust were impinging from outside as well as inside on the administration of an institution of higher learning.

He said any attempt to build or reorient higher education in such a situation required administrative acumen. Administrative strength and sensitivity removed hurdles in the path of learning, and allowed academics to thrive, as this university had displayed, he said.Stating that any institutional future is dependent upon enabling the faculty, students and the staff to overcome cynicism, the President said the one way of achieving this was making everyone a stakeholder in collaborative institution-building.

Immersive teaching supplemented by intensive research alone could advance the vision of the university in generating new knowledge and sharing it with everyone, he added.Mukherjee said that it was important to recall that the singular feature of ‘vidya-dana’ that this country had extended on a planetary scale was aimed at attaining happiness for everyone.

The president wished the students leaving the university to carry its legacy as they moved on to attain a happy, prosperous and meaningful life. Governor E S L Narasimhan, Deputy Chief Minister Md Mahmood Ali and others were also present. University Vice Chancellor Sunaina Singh presented the report of the university and several students were awarded gold medals and degrees.
