Following a glut due to high production of chilli this year, the price that skyrocketed to Rs 12,000 per quintal last year took a nosedive this year with the traders offering anywhere around Rs 5,000 a quintal.

Taking advantage of the farmers’ situation, the traders offered between Rs 3,000 and Rs 3,500 a quintal. Fuelled by this, the farmers entered into an altercation with the market yard officials.

Unsatisfied with the response, a section of farmers turned violent and gatecrashed into the office of the market committee secretary and damaged the furniture.
