Hyderabad: The DRDO is willing to support Osmania University by establishing infrastructure provided the university identifies key areas for research, said G Satheesh Reddy, scientific advisor to Defence Minister while speaking at the Osmania University centenary celebrations here on Friday. He was the chief guest for the session on OU vision.

Lamenting on the lack of research being conducted in Indian universities and Osmania University in particular, Satheesh Reddy said, “Only one per cent of the students get into research in India and 95 % of IITians go abroad for research.”

“This anomaly should change and services of alumni who are willing to come back to India should be taken. India has always been a technology follower.

Citing the example of former President of India APJ Abdul Kalam, he said that when he took charge in Hyderabad there were just five projects but the visionary that he was, he motivated scientists and within a span of five years, the centre had more than 100 projects. Osmania University too needs to fund research by identifying at least 50 areas of research.

15-year vision document
The panelists comprising former vice chancellors, UGC members and directors of prominent institutions were unanimous that Osmania University needs a 15-year vision document as technology is moving at break-neck speed.

Ch Mohan Rao, former director, CCMB, said, “A 50-year period would be farfetched. OU needs to identify three or four departments which should be flushed with funds and human resources to turn them into centres of excellence.” Setting up of an innovation centre and bringing in industry was essential, he opined.

Concurring with his view, OU Vice Chancellor Prof Ramchandram said, “Only 18 % engineering graduates are employable and it is a serious issue of concern.”
