As soon as the Council met, Congress leaders resorted to protest and demanded that the government discuss the problems of chilli farmers. The Chairman then asked the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) MLC Syed Amin Jafri to speak on the bill. The Congress leaders tried to go into the well but were prevented by the Marshals and amid furore Legislative Affairs Minister T Harish Rao asked the Council Chairman to put the bill to vote.
Later speaking at media point, leader of Opposition in Council Shabbir Ali said, the Opposition was not provided a chance to speak and the bill was passed in haste. He alleged that the government had run away from discussing the plight of the farmers.Describing this as the 'black-day' in the history of the Legislative Council, he said ruling party was trying to stifle the voices of Opposition. He said this kind of suppression over the Opposition was not witnessed even during the undivided Andhra Pradesh.
“It was shocking that the Marshals were brought in to prevent the opposition from registering their protest,” he said. Shabbir Ali said the manner in which the government rushed with the amendments, there was every possibility that the centre might reject it again. The government wants that to happen since it can blame the Congress for such a situation.
Shabbir Ali questioned as to why the State government, which claims to be surplus State, was not ready to support the farmers. He said neighbouring State, which is Revenue Deficit State was extending support to the farmers of red chillies by giving a bonus of Rs 1500. Another Congress member, K Rajagopal Reddy said since the TRS government was anti-farmer in the policy, about 3,000 farmers committed suicide during the past three years. He said the Chief Minister had never reached out to the families of these farmers, even though he calls himself a farmer.
