Khammam: The police foiled a protest called by Telangana Legislature Party Deputy Leader Ponguleti Sudhakar Reddy here on Sunday. Reddy was taken into custody and sent to II Town police station. Speaking to media persons, Reddy demanded the government to provide remunerative price to chilli. “In addition to remunerative price, the government should assist farmers by providing an extra Rs 2,000 per quintal,” he said.

Criticising the government for not keeping a tab on middlemen, he sought the administration to make purchases through Markfed. Apart from chilli growers, farmers of red gram and turmeric are also in distress due to steep drop in the prices. Referring to the disorder that broke out in Khammam market yard on Friday, Reddy demanded the government to withdraw the cases foisted against the farmers.

Former Minister Vanama Venkateswar Rao, who met Reddy at the police station, condemned the arrest of Congress leaders who resorted to peaceful protest seeking remunerative price to chilli. Terming the government as anti-farmer, he said that TRS will pay for it.

DCC president Aitham Satyam, TPCC official spokesperson Katla Ranga Rao, Minority State leaders Md Fazal, Md Tajuddin and Youth Congress leader Raparthi Sharat were among others arrested by the police.
