Hyderabad: The United States of America, which was once a preferred destination for higher studies, is fast losing sheen among students belonging to Most Backward Classes (MBC) and Backward Classes (BC) from Telangana.

According to sources in the BC Welfare Department most of the students preferred USA, to pursue MS and M Tech, when the study abroad programme was launched under Mahatma Jyotirao Phule Overseas Scholarship Scheme (MJPOVCSS).

The government scheme covers financial assistance for the entire study period. Besides, the students could also source bank loans and were even allowed to avail scholarships, teaching assistance on the basis of their academic performance while pursuing their studies.

Speaking to The Hans India, a senior official pointed out that MJPOVCSS is provided to the students who were selected by the universities in USA, Australia, Canada, and Singapore among other countries.

As many students failed to obtain a study visa for USA, they are approaching the BC welfare department to permit them to change their preference to other countries including, Singapore, Australia and Canada to pursue their higher studies.

At present there are about 150 students waiting for the final selection to avail financial assistance for the current year under MJPOVSS, for which the selections would be finalised soon.

The government had already released Rs 4 crore towards meeting the scholarship disbursements and the Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao had directed the senior officials to select as many eligible candidates as possible to encourage more MBC and BC students to pursue their higher studies abroad.

Officials were also directed to provide adequate funds to meet the disbursement of scholarships.
This year, unlike the previous years, hardly any students applied for the financial assistance to pursue higher education in USA.
