Hyderabad: The High Court at Hyderabad in an interim order on Thursday permitted shop owners in RTC bus stations in Telangana State to sell any brand of bottled mineral water which has the approval of Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) or Food Safety Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), instead of only Bisleri brand.

The division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Ramesh Ranganathan and Justice Shameem Akhter gave this direction while hearing the petition moved by D Zahed Basha and other shopkeepers complaining that the TSRTC authorities were pressurising them to sell only Bisleri brand of mineral water in their shops by issuing a circular to that effect on December 9 last year.

The single judge bench had dismissed the petition of the shopkeepers upholding the right of TSRTC to mandate what brand of mineral water must be sold in the retail outlets. The shopkeepers had preferred an appeal against the single judge order and the division bench hearing the case gave the shopkeepers relief by way of interim order.

The TSRTC counsel questioned the maintainability of the appeal as the RTC was within its rights to enforce standards of facilities for the passengers. After hearing the arguments, the bench passed the interim order providing relief to the shopkeepers.
