Jagtial: Jagtial mangoes, the most sought-after elsewhere in north side including the national capital Delhi, finally to storm into the local market in Telangana. Travesty is such that although Jagtial mangoes are hugely popular in at least nine north Indian States, the king of fruit failed to get recognition in its own land due to lack of exposure and marketing.
However, Jagtial is famous for Benishan mangoes, the two varieties that earned name and fame in the undivided Andhra Pradesh were Nuzvid and Banganapalli. Against this backdrop, the district administration is putting in huge efforts to promote the Jagtial mangoes.
It may be noted here that mango is one of the major crops in the district as it was cultivated in 18 mandals covering an area of 44,150 acres with an average production of 3 Metric Tonnes per acre. Of the total production of 1.32 lakh MT, Benishan variety forms a major chunk of 95 per cent. The other variety is Dasheri mangoes.
Speaking to The Hans India, Horticulture assistant director M Jyothy said: “The secret behind the deliciousness of the Benishan mango is its harvesting. Farmers here take special care while plucking the fruit. They pluck the fruit one by one with utmost care.
After plucking, they keep the plucked side groundwards so that the liquid oozed from the fruit is absorbed. This apart, the climatic conditions are also conducive for the fruit to get sweetened.”
Market yard secretary Siraj said that over 13,000 farmers are dependent on the market yard and at an average 500 tonnes of fruit a day is being exported to Delhi, Chandigarh, Maharashtra, Haryana, Punjab, Gujarat, Rajasthan etc.
The market has so far earned Rs 30 lakh in this season.” District Collector A Sharath, who is keen to popularise the fruit by creating a brand image, has ensured pasting of logo stickers – Jagtial Mangoes – Telangana. The collector also presented boxed mangoes to Governor ESL Narasimhan, Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao and others as part of promotion.
