Hyderabad: Janasena Party chief Pawan Kalyan on Friday demanded that the Centre should not discriminate between Telangana State and Andhra Pradesh in procuring chillies.

The Centre, Pawan said, in a statement here, had announced that it would procure 88,300 metric tonnes of chillies from Andhra Pradesh and 33,700 MT from Telangana State.

He said this would leave the farmers of Telangana State ending up with at least one lakh metric tonnes of chilli stocks. He demanded that the Union government procure 88,300 metric tonnes of chillies from Telangana State on a par with Andhra Pradesh

He also expressed dismay over the Centre’s announcement of Rs 5,000 a quintal as minimum support price (MSP) for chilli produce. The governments at the Centre and the States should not shrug away from their responsibility of helping the farmers crippled by debt burden arising out of lack of remunerative prices.

The governments have been extending lakhs of crores of rupees in subsidies to support of industries and questioned as to why the same relief was not extended to the farmers.
