Hyderabad: Even as the committee on fee regulation in private schools is yet to submit its report to the government, private schools in the State have increased the fee by 30 to 40 per cent much to the chagrin of the parents.

The parents who have been visiting the schools to pay the first term fee were told that the fee was hiked and it would be about 40 per cent more than the previous academic year.

A parent told The Hans India that the school in which his son (third class) was studying has hiked the fee from Rs 19,000 to Rs 25,000. He wondered how the school can charge Rs 25,000 for class three boy?

Similar cases have been reported from various parts of the State. As the government is contemplating to fix the fee of the private schools, the managements have raised the fee to get the benefit.

It may be noted that Government has constituted a committee under the chairmanship of Prof T Tirupati Rao to fix the fee structure in the private schools since the private schools were collecting abnormal amounts in the form of fee without any accountability.

When asked, the members of the committee opined that the fee structure of the schools should be fixed on the basis of their expenses. Government should approve the fee proposed by the schools after the school expenses are verified with the help of the vouchers and accounts.

The committee has also proposed that the private schools should not insist on buying the textbooks, other stationery and uniform in the schools and parents should be allowed to buy them wherever they find the prices cheap.

According to the sources, the committee would submit its report on May 15 and government would issue orders based on the recommendations. The fee regulation may be implemented from this academic year.

Speaking to The Hans India, president of Telangana Parents Association N Narayana said that the private schools have been raising the fee in the absence of regulation. He said that the schools should justify the fee structure with evidence.

He said that according to the committee, the schools could propose their own fee structure and government may not fix uniform fee. However, if the fee proposed by the private management was not supported with evidence, the government could reduce them.

Narayana said that since private schools have already been collecting the first term fee from the students, the excess amount collected by them, which is more than the fee approved by the government, should be adjusted to the second term.

The TPA has been fighting for fee regulation in private schools for the past two and half years.
