Hyderabad: Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has decided to demolish 23 old markets which have been in dilapidated condition. The civic body officials say that the structures of these markets have become very weak and may collapse in the monsoon season.

The officials maintain that in order to minimise the loss of life, the GHMC decided to demolish the structures and to construct multi-storey mega markets which would accommodate more number of sellers depending on the area.

According to the data collected from GHMC, the civic body would demolish Fareed Market (constructed in 1965), Maisaram Market (1971), Malakpet Market (1972), Begum Bazar Market(1971), Mangalhat Market (1969), Mahboob Chowk Market (1972), Moazzam Jahi Market (1972), Azad Market (1978), Kanda Swamy Market (1971) and Bus Depot Mulgies (1980) in the south zone.

Similarly, Koti Subway (constructed in 1980),Putli Bowli old stalls (1980), Chikkadpally Market (1979), Lingampally Market (1972), Panjagutta Market (1966) and Ameerpet Market (1966) in the central zone will be demolished.

Likewise, Hissam Gunj Monda market (built in 1954), Ramgopalpet Market (1954), Old Jail Market (1954), New Bhoiguda Market (1954), SPG Church Market (1954), Amar Medical Hall (1954) and Sajjan Lal Street Market (1954) in the north zone will be demolished.

However, the GHMC staff did not identify any marker in dilapidated condition in the west zone. When queried about this, a senior GHMC official told The Hans India that following instructions of Mayor Bonthu Rammohan, the civic body has decided to demolish old markets which have been in dilapidated condition as they have been posing threat to the lives of vendors.

The officer said that the vendors would be accommodated at other places until new markets will be constructed. He said the civic body is contemplating constructing G+4 floors which would accommodate at least 200 vendors. He said that GHMC would take up the demolition drive from May last week.
