Hyderabad: The State government heaved a sigh of relief as the High Court struck down the petition filed against the Kaleswaram Irrigation Project on the ‘forceful’ land acquisition. However, the Opposition parties reacted cautiously on the particular issue.

Welcoming the court verdict, the Telangana Water Resources Development Corporation Chairman V Prakash said the project would provide irrigation facility to nearly 30 to 40 lakh acres once the lift irrigation project was completed.

Besides, the project would help increase groundwater levels across Telangana. Prakash said that the Opposition parties’ conspiracy to stall irrigation projects by filing petitions in the courts would deter the Telangana State’s interests in the long term.

Irrigation expert Syamprasad Reddy said the court’s judgment was a slap on the face of the Opposition parties. He suggested that the government take necessary steps to reduce the submergence of the land during the construction of the project.

The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) senior leader R Prakash Reddy said that government‘s responsibility was to ensure every displaced get adequate compensation and also provide rehabilitation to all those who lost livelihoods at the project site.

The farmers who are losing their lands in Warangal and Karimnagar districts under the project already opposed the irrigation scheme for not rendering justice to them. He demanded that the government announce compensation in advance before acquiring the land.

Congress leader and MLA A Sampath Kumar said the Opposition parties were not against the irrigation projects but had opposed the government for the neglect of the relief and rehabilitation of the oustees of the project. The Congress has been demanding to acquire the land by implementing the Land Acquisition Act-2013 adopted by the Union government.
