Hyderabad: The sliding doors and wire-mesh partitions, which were introduced in the city buses with much fanfare to provide security for women passengers in November 2014, have disappeared from most of the TSRTC buses now.

The TSRTC had introduced the compartment system separating the male passengers from the female passengers by installing grills and having a sliding door from where only the conductor was allowed to pass through for issuing tickets.

Two and half years down the lane, it has been found that in most of the buses the grills and sliding door have gone missing. Laxman (name changed), conductor of an RTC bus, said doors were not in place in most of the buses.

There is lack of monitoring by the officials resulting in compartments getting damaged. The sliding doors were removed in some buses as it was causing inconvenience to the conductors to move for issuing tickets.

“It was a wasteful expenditure. There is no one to look after these grills for maintenance and it remained like one time exercise,” said Laxman. Another conductor said the instructions given to them were to keep these doors open during morning hours and close them in the evening. Initially it worked well but later the sliding doors started causing problems and later they were removed.

He said he does not know who removed them and why. When asked about it, TSRTC Greater Hyderabad Zone Executive Director A Purushottam Naik said that he will get the matter examined. He said if there are any doors missing, they would be brought to the body building unit for repairs.

He said that it is the responsibility of the conductor to keep the administration informed about any issues pertaining to maintenance so that necessary action could be taken, he said. The sliding doors were introduced in the city ordinary buses based on the recommendations of a committee headed by senior IAS officer Poonam Malakondaiah on safety of women.

The committee had recommended to the government to have separate compartment for female passengers for their safety. The compartment was introduced in 2,400 buses with a cost of about Rs 16,000 per bus.
