Hyderabad: In a knee-jerk reaction, to the State government’s proposal to the Central government to build the State secretariat, the local military authority installed a huge board titled Gen Krishna Rao Parade Grounds at the Hyderabad Cricket Association (HCA) entrance side.

The decision to name the Parade Grounds was done without much fanfare. Ravi Kiran, a resident of Picket said, “I was surprised to see the board on Monday while going to work.”

“The decision to name the Parade Grounds is welcome and naming it after Gen Krishna Rao, a national hero is befitting, but the circumstance it has come about is baffling. The naming of the ground is a clear indication as a checkmate to the state government’s proposal,” says Raghu, a retired railway employee and resident of Mudfort.

The State government had approached the Centre seeking allotment of land in the last week of April. Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao even met the Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi for the same purpose. Last time the State government made an attempt to acquire Bison Polo and Gymkhana Ground was in 2015.

By naming the Parade Grounds after Gen Krishna Rao, the local military authority is making its intention clear that it does not want to lose control of the grounds.

The grounds are not only used by the local military for parades and functions but the annual cricket league matches for one day championships and also inter-school tournaments are conducted here.

A senior member of the HCA said, “Hundreds of cricketers were nurtured in these very grounds and quite a few went to play for the country. There are 217 cricket teams in Hyderabad and the Parade Grounds an inseparable part of the scheme of things.”

“The Army does not want to part with Bison Polo, Gymkhana Grounds and Parade Grounds and the renaming of the Parade Grounds should be seen in this light,” says B T Srinivasan, general secretary, United Federation of Residents Welfare Association.
