Warangal: BJP State president K Laxman has said that the State government has no time to look into the problems faced by the chilli farmers.

Speaking to the media persons here on Monday, he said that the Minister for Irrigation and Marketing, T Harish Rao, who has time to supervise the arrangements of the TRS public meeting in Warangal that held on April 27, didn’t even visit Enumamula market yard once to know the plight of chilli growers.

The BJP government has provided at least Rs 5,000 per quintal support price for chilli but the State didn’t even allocate a single rupee, he said, playing down Harish’s remarks against the Central government. The Centre also provided Rs 750 crore for the purchase of red gram, he reminded.

Due to the TRS government’s failure to provide godowns and cold storage units, farmers have to sell their produce at lower prices, he said, accusing the administration of supporting the middlemen and traders.

Although the neighbouring States like Andhra Pradesh were offering some kind of assistance to chilli growers, why the TRS government didn’t react to the problems of the farmers, he questioned.

Laxman said that due to lack of awareness over chilli cultivation in the State, administration failed to take measures to rescue the farmers. Instead the government is trying to blame the Centre, he said.

He demanded the government to announce at least another Rs 2,000 in addition to the Centre’s Rs 5,000 a quintal support price. It’s been four days since the Centre has announced the support price for chilli, however, the government is yet to start the purchase of chilli, he said.

He also demanded Harish’s resignation for his failure as the Minister for Marketing. Earlier, the police arrested Laxman and other district leaders when they tried to visit the Enumamula market yard and shifted them to Mills Colony Police Station.

BJP Warangal urban district president Rao Padma, Rural district president Edla Ashok Reddy, senior leaders T Rajeshwar Rao, M Dharma Rao and others were among others present.
