Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has decided to demolish all unauthorised structures erected on the full tank levels (FTLs) of the 185 lakes present in the civic body limits.

Besides this, the corporation had also decided to demolish about 1,200 unauthorised structures constructed on the FTLs of city nalas. The GHMC decided to rope in experienced players to take the demolition drive by using implosion technology.

According to a GHMC official, the first controlled demolition activity using explosives, in one of the illegal structures near Sunnam Cheruvu Lake in Guttala Begumpet near Madhapur, turned out to be only partially successful.

HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Illegal structures on city nalas too face demolition axe
  • Implosion technology to be used for the drive
  • GHMC to demolish unauthorised constructions in FTL levels

The GHMC had used implosion technology to raze an unauthorised five-storied structure which had come up in the FTL of Sunnam Cheruvu Lake. However, upon detonation, the building, instead of collapsing like a pack of cards, tilted to one side precariously with little damage to upper floors.

Citing this, the GHMC officials have decided to rope in about three experienced players who have been successfully using implosion technology. The GHMC official said the civic body would embark on a survey to identify the unauthorised structures in the 185 lakes present in the corporation limits.

He said the corporation would first shortlist the ongoing constructions which have been lying vacant. He said the corporation would demolish the vacant buildings in phase I and issue to notices to all unauthorised constructions which were erected in the FTLs of city lakes.

The GHMC official further said the corporation had also decided to demolish about 1,200 unauthorised constructions which were constructed in the FTLs of city nalas. He said the corporation would first hold an all party meeting with city MLAs prior to the demolition drive.

He said the corporation had already written about the same to the State government and are waiting for its decision to take up the demolition drive.
