Hyderabad to see hi-tech garbage bins soon

​Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation will soon install advanced underground garbage bins equipped with sensors by next week. The officials have decided to use underground garbage bins fitted with sensors at vulnerable garbage points (VGPs).

These garbage bins were installed in the past, but removed for unknown reasons. The GHMC will install underground garbage bins at 15 different locations in the city as a pilot scheme. The GHMC is contemplating installing the garbage bins at 40 critical locations, if the experiment proves a success.

The GHMC has disbanded as many as 1,116 VGPs during 100 day action plan last year. The GHMC officials after conducting a comprehensive survey have found that the reason for open dumping is due to delay in door-to-door garbage collection by the swachh auto-rickshaw drivers. In a bid to overcome the problem, the GHMC has decided to install highly sophisticated underground garbage bins at several critical areas in the city.

A senior official told The Hans India that the GHMC had indentified 40 critical locations across the city to install underground garbage bins. He said that each underground garbage bin would cost Rs 5.5 lakh and they would be sponsored by some private firms under corporate social responsibility. He said that three corporate companies had already contributed about Rs 1.5 crore and another two companies had pledged to contribute.

The GHMC official further said the underground garbage bins will not open unless the garbage in the bin reaches its full capacity. Dry and wet garbage can be dumped into the bins separately. These bins will be installed at first near hospitals, the official said.
