Hyderabad residents allege that they are forced to depend on private sources to meet their drinking water needs

Hyderabad: Tall claims of Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) to supply drinking water for 24 hours seems to have gone for a toss as residents in several parts of the city are still waiting for regular water supply in alternative days.

Even after construction four reservoirs in the peripheral circles, the residents still have been suffering from irregular water supply. Residents claimed that due to irregular water supply, they were forced to depend on private water cans to serve their drinking water needs.

However, the officials claimed that they had given about 200-odd new water connections and supplied drinking water on regular intervals.

According to a Water Board official, HMWS&SB has recently provided water connections from four newly inaugurated reservoirs under Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO) project in the areas HUDA - Miyapur (6 million litres), Nallagandla (3 million litres), Gopannapally (2.5 million litres) and Kukatpally Housing Board (KPHB) phase-IV (2.5 million litres) - under Mission Bhagiratha.

However, water had been supplied in different timings to the households depending upon the functioning of the local offices of HMWS&SB of that particular area, said the Chief General Manager D Ramchadra Reddy.

“About 200 water connections have been provided in each of these areas and connections are still being provided as applications come in. The timings at which the water is supplied differ from place to place depending on the local offices,” he said.

Despite the promises of providing drinking water for 24 hours, the supply is restricted to an hour in the morning for every alternate day to once in 2-3 days or even a week sometimes. Though such irregularities exist in older connections in various parts of the city, new connections have hardly brought any difference.

“There is no way I can manage time from my daily schedule to collect drinking water if such irregularities exist. And then I don't want to suffer in this summer heat without any dirking water," says Tarun Vallabhaneni (36), a resident of KPHB phase-IV who has opted for private supply for his drinking water needs.

Out of 56 reservoirs under HUDCO project, 12 have been completed with four up and running. The 24-month-long project is expected to be completed this year.

Though more than one lakh connections are promised by the Water Board, out of this project under Urban Mission Bhagiratha, such irregularities in water supply will only lead to people opting for private drinking water supply over the latest connections provided by the government, say the residents.
