Hyderabad: One person was arrested for threatening a woman with knife and snatching her mobile phone in an apparent attempt to force her to marry him.

The arrested person has been identified as Paul Sundar Raj. Additional Commissioner of Police Swati Lakra said the accused went to the woman’s office at Khairatabad around 7 pm on Thursday, snatched her mobile phone and threatened her with dire consequences, brandishing a knife.

The woman managed to inform the SHE teams through phone, following which a nearby SHE team was deputed to handle the situation. One police team reached the spot and nabbed the accused red-handed.

Enquiries revealed that the accused and the victim were colleagues at a private school in Medak in 2013. He had made a marriage proposal in the past which she refused. However, he continued to pester her to marry him. Unable to bear the harassment, the woman left her job and joined a software firm in Hyderabad, Swati said.

Despite that, the accused did not mend his ways. He used to harass her over phone. He came to know recently that the woman’s marriage was fixed with another man, following which he went to her office, snatched her mobile phone and began threatening her with a knife saying he would kill her and her fiancé before killing himself if she did not marry him, the police officer said.

Timely intervention by the SHE team prevented a serious crime, Swati said and appealed to the people to approach the police for help in times of trouble.
