The State government allows private colleges to collect exorbitant fees; as many as six lakh students to suffer

Hyderabad: While the government has held back payment of dues of fee reimbursement scheme to the managements of private degree colleges, it has allowed them to collect exorbitant special fee from the students.

An internal circular issued in this regard said private colleges were allowed to collect Rs 7,000 as special fee from urban college students and Rs 5,000 from rural colleges.

The increase in special fee is seven times more for urban private degree college students and five times more for rural degree
students.

With the steep raise in special fee, the total fee of Science groups would go up to Rs 20,000 and Rs 10,000 for Arts groups.

The circular said the fee reimbursement scheme would not cover the increased fee and students must pay the difference fee from their pockets from this academic year.

It may be recalled that private degree colleges in the State boycotted conducting second semester exams of degree students for the last 15 days due to the delay in paying the Fee Reimbursement Scheme dues.

Deputy Chief Minister Kadiyam Srihari and Special Chief Secretary of Education Department held talks with the leaders of Private Degree College Managements’ Association.

Speaking to The Hans India, president of Telangana Private Degree and PG Colleges Managements’ Association G Ramana Reddy said they had withdrawn the agitation on conditions that the Chief Minister would address their issues.

He said due to the government decision to implement Choice Based Credit System (CBCS), there was a 30 per cent more burden on the colleges as they had to be run for 12 months.

In the past, the colleges were run for 10 months and to implement CBCS they should be run for 12 months.

The Degree College Managements’ Association has been demanding the government to raise the tuition fee which was the same since 2012 as the maintenance costs have gone up.

The government refused the proposal and allowed them to collect the revised special fee from the students. With the abnormal increase in special fee, as many as 6 lakh students will be hit hard.
