​Hyderabad: The State Government, through the Adult Education Department (AED), plans to educate 50,000 illiterates in identified slums through Akshara Jyothi Samithi (AJS) sixth phase in Hyderabad Collectorate limits this academic year. The programme had begun in 2010 and is still continuing. The government has initiated its sixth phase for 2017-18.

Deputy Director of Adult Education Department, V Naga Lakshmi said “The literacy programme is implemented in Hyderabad with the help of volunteers in the notified slums. This programme is purely voluntarily based. Volunteers identify the slum areas and conduct classes with the support of Mandal Coordinators (MCOs). Volunteers would be given training by the end of May”.

She said Akshara Jyothi is for six months period; there will be an evolution test and after the course, an adult student will be awarded with a certificate.

At present, 16 coordinators have been deployed to supervise the programme and they are paid remuneration of Rs 3,000 per month. In each Mandal, 210 volunteers have been identified and each volunteer will teach 10-15 illiterates. Persons in the age group of 15-70 are eligible to get education.

Naga Lakshmi said that the total target for basic literacy programme in city is to educate 3,75, 786 illiterates. Since 2010, the department provided education to 1,48,941. She said Adult Education Department will provide education to 50,000 illiterates in slums during the current year.

The department had identified 16 Mandals - Secunderabad, Nampally, Amberpet, Charminar, Saidabad, Golconda, Asifnagar, Bahadurpura, Marredpally, Khairatabad, Musheerabad, Ameerpet, Himayathnagar, Shaikpet and Tirumalagiri.

She said the MCO, monitoring officer and department staff will adopt the basthi to provide adult education. She further said volunteers, who have completed intermediate, graduates, and under graduates are eligible for teaching.
