Hyderabad: Negligence on the part of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation officials exposed yet again. The civic body officials hand in glove with private agencies have given permission to hoardings (for which height should not exceed 40 feet from the ground) ignoring grave threat to the citizens.

Even after GHMC commissioner B Janardhan Reddy instructed the ground level staff to examine the stability of the hoardings (even though they obtained structural stability from certified private consultants), they had turned a blind eye. The official apathy was clearly evident from the collapse of three hoardings at Banjara Hills and Balanagar recently.

Even though there were no causalities reported, five four-wheelers were damaged in the incidents. If the stability of the hoardings is not verified with immediate effect, there will be potential danger to the lives of the locals during the onset monsoon.

According to the data collected from the GHMC, all three collapsed hoardings have structural stability certificate issued by the Beacon Consultancies.

Two hoardings at Banjara Hills have been maintained by Shree Ads and a hoarding at Balanagar Vimal Theatre by Kalyan Ads. Highly placed sources in the GHMC claimed that the corporation has given permission to 1,165 hoardings (for which the height should not exceed 40 feet from the ground).

Sources said that the ground level staff hand in glove with ad agencies has accorded permission to most of the hoardings without prior examination.

When queried about the same subject, a senior GHMC official told The Hans India that the corporation had already issued notices to the Ad agencies concerned. He said the civic body has asked them to submit their explanation within three days or else the agencies would be blacklisted. He also said that the civic body would embark on a survey to study the structural stability of all hoardings.

The GHMC official further said all the agencies have been asked to take down the flexis immediately and not to mount flexis or display advertisements on hoardings and unipoles till June 15.

He said the ban has been imposed in view of a warning issued by the Indian Meteorological Department stating that Hyderabad city might witness intense spells of rains of the order of 5-10 cm per hour and strong / gusty winds ranging between 100-150 kmph.

Further, it has also stated that the weather conditions could also generate lightning, thunder, hails in the coming month.
