Hyderabad: The police have strengthened security for Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao. Armed with sophisticated weapons in their jungle fatigue, as many as 18 Greyhound commandos will now guard KCR.The move comes in the wake of intelligence inputs indicating the growing Left Wing Extremist (LWE) activity in the State during the last few months.

Dissent among people has been growing slowly, but steadily and some youngsters have started inching towards the outlawed group to fight against what the Maoists call oppression, sources said.

Despite the tall claims by senior police officers and the politicians, Maoists are making concerted efforts to stage a comeback in Telangana State, taking advantage of the lapses in police administration following reorganisation of districts, the sources said.

In many of the newly created districts several posts are lying vacant and the administration at the district and sub-division level is yet to get down to the nitty-gritty details.Besides, the intelligence wings are busy gathering political intelligence keeping aside the anti-Maoist work.

Sources also point to two recent developments to prove that LWE activity is gaining ground in the State. One is that the Union government has agreed to deploy three companies of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in Telangana State at the request of State police to tackle Maoist threat to some of its irrigation projects. Referring to another development that indicates growing LWE activity, the sources said, is the government’s action to fortify 24 police stations in the LWE affected areas by released Rs 50 crore.

All these reasons compelled the police in strengthening the security for the Chief Minister. But, a senior intelligence official, on condition of anonymity, said only the outer cordon security has been strengthened in view of the growing number of visitors. “Since people from all walks of life come to meet the Chief Minister, we have to take adequate precautions and there is nothing to worry about Maoist threat,” the official said.
