Hyderabad: Malkam Cheruvu is entangled with a new controversy, as the NGOs, fishermen society and residents claim that the court has given stay order to stop the beautification works; but the officials claim the government has instructed them to carry on with the works. NGOs allege that Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has been overriding the interim order of High Court to halt all works at Malkam Cheruvu.

NGOs claimed that they submitted plea to the High Court to dredge the illegal landfill in Malkam Cheruvu and open up the blocked inflow channels for the survival of the lake and bring it back to fishable, swimmable, and potable standards.
Earlier, an order was issued by the Chief Justice of High Court at Hyderabad on April 28, 2017 in the case of Hameed Khan Kunta (Lake Banjara). In the order, the Court has stayed all acts of landfill in the name of walking track and beautification or any other activities in Lake Banjara.

Lubna Sarwath, co-convener of the Save Our Urban Lakes (SOUL) said that the Timber Lake Colony is a private colony and they got stay orders from the High Court not to take up any beautification work at Timber Lake. She further said that in order to construct a walk way, the civic body cannot fill up the lake, as we have only few lakes left in the city. The government has adopting unscientific methods in lake beautification resulting in lake encroachment, she added.

Vice president of Timber Lake Colony, Prasad Reddy said “There is nearly 15 to 20 feet road, but to construct a commercial complex, the encroachers need at least 60 feet road for which the government has been helping the encroachers. He further said that they have been fishing since three generations.

``We are doing fishing here from last 50 to 60 years and there are nearly 80 families who earn their livelihood through fishing. As the lake is getting polluted, there is no fish in the lake, ” he said. Assistant engineer from Irrigation Department, Nagaraj said that this walking track is laid at the boundary of the lake and not inside the lake and they entered into an agreement. He further said that the aim is to give a walking track and to give a social protection to the tank.
