​Hyderabad: Greens oppose establishment of new pharmaceutical units in Pharma City, which is proposed to come up at Mucherla on the city outskirts. This has been discussed at the Round Table Conference held by Lubna Sarwath of Save Our Urban Lakes (SOUL) at Government City College in Old City.

Members in the gathering opined that the establishment of new pharma units in Mucherla Pharma City has to be stopped keeping in view of environmental pollution and public health. Lubna Sarwath, co-convener of the SOUL, said that there is huge pharma pollution caused by the pharma industries within the city which is affecting the health of people; and there is a huge fish killing in the lakes.

Government City College Principal C Manjulatha said that the Pharma pollution which is let into the nala and Musi River has to be stopped. She said in order to stop this Pharma pollution industries also should be involved to take part in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Retired senior scientist Dr K Babu Rao said that there is no need to come up with new Pharma city projects as they would pollute other areas. He said Zero Liquid Discharge is not possible which was claimed by the government.

He said that government is only experimenting with environment and public by establishing new Pharma units. Do we really need a Pharma university?, he asked. K Sandeep, a resident of Jeedimetla said that the existing Pharma industries should move as there are lot of effluents affecting the health of the people residing in the area.

He further added that these industries have been polluting the areas across the city. They do not follow the rules to protect environment, he said.
