Siddipet: The death of Ch Santoshi, BCom second year student of Government Degree College at Siddipet last week, may remain shrouded in mystery as police continue to ignore crucial evidences. Attempts are being made to prove that the orphan girl, who was adopted by a couple in 2009, died of ill health.

Close friends and relatives of Santoshi, however, claimed to have seen injuries all over her body. Only after protests by students and people’s organisations, post-mortem was conducted on May 25 and it was videotaped.

There are allegations that Padma, who had adopted Santoshi, had ill treated her. Several witnesses claimed that Padma’s younger son Sharath used to beat her up badly for simple reasons like eating in a bakery, or for staying overnight at Sircinagandla village (Santoshi’s parental village).

Santoshi’s elder sister Renuka was also adopted by the same family after the death of their parents. Renuka, had discontinued her degree and started pursuing a nursing programme at Ponnala near Siddipet, where she used to stay in a hostel. Renuka left her adopted parents allegedly due to similar harassment and torture.

Santoshi, who had left her adopted parents thrice in the past; had to return to the family till her elder sister got married. The adopted parents never used to feed the two girls properly; and on many occasions, the girls used to eat in the BC hostel where their friends were staying.

Her friends also said that Santoshi wanted to join NCC in degree, but her adopted parents did not allow her as she had to go to stadium every morning for running.

Santoshi’s lecturers knew about her parents’ high-handed behaviour. Her Principal used to pay her examination fee for the past couple of years. According to friends, there were injuries all over her body.
The police, however, said the injuries could have been caused by ‘summer heat.’

Siddipet Police Commissioner Shiva Kumar, on Monday, released a press statement on how Santoshi had fallen sick due to some gynaecology problems she had been suffering for the past couple of months.

According to him, on the fateful night, Santoshi was taken to Siddipet area hospital where she was given saline water. Then she was taken to MCH hospital, Suraksha hospital, Dr Ramchander Rao’s hospital, and back to the Area Hospital. He said Santoshi died on her way to the Area Hospital. She took ill at 10 pm on May 22 and died at 1.02 am on May 23.

Why Santoshi’s body was removed from Siddipet Area Hospital by her adopted parents before post-mortem was conducted has not yet been answered.

The case is being investigated by One Town Circle Inspect under the supervision of Siddipet ACP Narasimha Reddy. Forensic Science Laboratory results are being awaited and till now no arrests have been made, though 16 people have been questioned in this respect.
