Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) instructed all departments not to dig roads from June 1 until the onset of monsoon. The civic body also asked the departments to restore the ongoing works by Wednesday. However, the corporation asked Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) to restore the road by June 10 since it has completed 864 kilometres digging of the total 1,164 kilometre total to lay new pipelines.

GHMC Commissioner B Janardhan Reddy on Tuesday held a review meeting with all line departments at the civic body headquarters near Tank Bund and made it clear that no digging would be allowed after May 31 and whatever works had been taken up so far, should be restored prior to June 1. The GHMC Commissioner said if any department took up emergency digging activity, the department concerned should seek necessary permission from the State government.

Janardhan Reddy also interacted with the engineering wing officials in order to learn the status of restoration works, desiltation, monsoon preparedness, forming of emergency teams and action plan to tackle the emergency situation. He also instructed the officials that no permission for digging would be given after May 31 unless in case of emergency works of HMWS&SB and other major government departments.

“In case of such permissions given, the concerned executive engineers must personally monitor and works may be restored under personal supervision immediately that too on priority,” he said.

The Commissioner further said the engineering wing officials must display sign boards at the site of works which were being taken up duly furnishing the detailed information of the works sanction time frame, phone numbers of the contractors and as well as the officials concerned for the convenience of the citizens to have a clarity on the works which were being taken up.
