Adilabad: Suddenly, one day Lalita called up her brother Jagadish stating that she is now in Gujarat and her in-laws and brother-in-law Arjun Chauhan sold her away for Rs 1.8 lakh. She appealed to him to come to her rescue as she is being tortured.

Who is Lalita and why was she sold away? What prompted the in-laws to get rid of her?Lalita married Arjun Chauhan’s brother, Ramesh belonging to Kishtapur village of Neradigonda mandal five years back. Two years after marriage and after she gave birth to a baby girl, the husband committed suicide by consuming poison.

She started eking out a living by working as sweeper in a school. On the pretext of finding her a good job, Arjun with the help of his friend Rekha sold Lalita last month to a human trafficking racket after forcibly taking her to Gujarat.

After receiving the phone call from Lalita, Jagadish confronted Arjun to tell him the whereabouts of Lalita. Though evasive at first, Arjun admitted that he sold Lalita away, says Jagadish. Not only that, Arjun had even threatened that he would sell the three-year-old daughter also, he added. In a written complaint to the Neredigonda police, Jagadish alleged that his sister Lalita was sold away by Arjun with the help of Rekha.

When The Hans India contacted Arjun, he evaded a direct answer and said that Lalita left home one month back and he did not know her whereabouts. He claimed that Lalita told him that she would marry again.

“Maybe she might have married,” he added. He shot back as to why he and his parents would sell her away. The neighbours told The Hans India that Lalita inherited three acres of land from her husband and the in-laws conspired to take away that property by selling her away in the name of marriage.

Suvarna of Kishtapur village said that Rekha belongs to Gujarat and both of them might have sold Lalita away. Neradionga SI Venkanna told The Hans India that he registered a case and investigating it.
