Hyderabad: Telangana State Commission for Women, in collaboration with Tharuni non-government organisation (NGO), organised a convergence consultation (workshop) on the implementation of Telangana Compulsory Registration of Marriages Act 2002. The day long workshop was held at Paryatak Bhavan at Begumpet

The main objective of the workshop is to prevent child marriages, child labour and trafficking in young women. The members also discussed about the possibilities of linking up cash incentive schemes or other Government programmes and policies for marriage registration. They had also discussed about possibilities of linking up the Government schemes like Kalyana Lakshmi and Shaadi Mubarak etc to encourage people to register their marriages.

Lokayukta Justice Subhashan Reddy said, “Every State should follow the system of compulsory registration of marriages. If people themselves register about their marriages, we can avoid child marriages and child labour. It was suggested that penalty of Rs 1000 can be imposed for the conduct of child marriages. Or the accused can be given jail term for three months to one year, the Lokayukta said.

Tripurana Venkataratnam, chairperson, Telangana State Commission for women said: “It is compulsory that all marriages in the country must be registered within the 30days of solemnisation. The compulsory registration of marriage in the country will help in dealing with many serious social and legal problems in the country.”

Sreedevi, Director of Municipal Administration said, “The compulsory registration of all marriages can be done through online at e-seva centres. By this registration we can achieve all the right of marriage.” Members including, Justice Subhashan Reddy, Tripurana Venkataratnam, Navin Mittal and Sreedevi participated in the workshop.
