A 19-year-old dalit girl committed suicide by dousing petrol and setting herself on fire unable to deal with the constant harassment of a constable in Yacharam on Monday.

The victim identified as Mandala Shyamala is a native of Dharmannagudem village, Yacharam mandal in Ranga Reddy district. The accused, Narsimha residing in the same area, is working as an Armed Reserve constable in Amberpet and had been harassing Shyamala in the name of love for the past four years.

With the constable being already married and a father of two kids, Shyamala's parents warned him to stay away from her.

However, the accused never stopped the harassment and on Monday night, he called Shyamala who immediately cut the call and set herself ablaze. Seeing the fumes coming out of her daughter's room, she raised an alarm and locals came to her rescue and doused the fire.

While the victim was rushed to the hospital, she succumbed to severe burns while undergoing treatment. A case has been registered by the Yacharam police against the accused who has absconded.
