​Hyderabad: In order to improve sanitation in the city, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has decided to set up bio-digester compost units which can generate manure and methane (cooking) gas from wet garbage (food waste). The civic body is contemplating installing one unit in each hotel, restaurant and function hall.

City Mayor Bonthu Rammohan said the hotel managements, during a meeting with them, were directed to install bio-digester compost units in their hotels and function halls. The segregation of garbage waste would made right at the household.

He said that each unit would cost about Rs 3.5 lakh and GHMC would seek the permission from State Government and Centre to provide them at subsidised price. He said the GHMC is also planning to set up bio-digester compost units at major apartments and others in order improve the sanitation in the city.

The Mayor said about 4,500 metric tons of garbage is produced in the city on daily basis and out of which the GHMC has been segregating more than 1,000 tons dry and wet separately. He said the GHMC has been taking the help of residential welfare associations (RWAs), nongovernmental organisations (NGOs), self-help groups in segregating wet and dry garbage by coordinating with ITC, Godrej, corporate sectors which have been deriving good results. He said that GHMC has provided 50 dry resource centres.
