CM constitutes committee to pursue issue with Centre

Hyderabad: The State government has stepped up its efforts to secure 12 per cent reservation to Muslims in education and employment. The government has forwarded the bill for the increasing reservations for Muslims from 4 to 12 per cent to the Union government for its approval. The bill was adopted by the Assembly in April.

Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao has now constituted a committee consisting of Chief Secretary S P Singh and Minority and Backward Classes Welfare Department Secretaries to pursue the issue with the Centre actively. The Chief Minister is also likely to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other Union Ministers and officials concerned towards July-end to exert pressure on them to speed up the process of according approval to the bill.

As per the procedure, the bill would have to get the President’s assent before the Centre approved the bill through Constitutional amendment. As the quota would cross 50 per cent, officials said the enhancement of reservation for Muslims would be possible only by including the issue of the enhanced reservation in the 9th schedule.

KCR had requested the Centre to include the quota in 9th schedule in the Constitution like Tamil Nadu got the exemption from providing more than 50 per cent reservation in the state. The government also submitted a detailed report on the socio –economic status of the Muslims in the State. In the report, government explained in detail the strong reasons for increasing quota for Muslims based on their social status, the official said.

The government, in its report, is trying to persuade the Centre to take into consideration the poor economic condition of the Muslims and not based on religion. The report prepared by State Backward Classes Commission was submitted to the Union Ministry of Home Affairs and sought its immediate intervention for the President’s approval, a senior official said.

Sources said that the government is also consulting legal luminaries to address legal complications, if any, come in the way of implementing the enhanced quota for Muslims.
