Hyderabad: Over flowing drains and nalas has become a common sight in the city. Due to sudden rainfall during the wee hours of Thursday, several areas in the city have been inundated and the water levels even reached above five feet which submerged several colonies.

Houses in many low lying areas have been submerged under the rain water. Several colonies including Mohammad Guda, Prakash Nagar, Abids, Hayathnagar, Banjara Hills, Panjagutta, Madhapur, Mehdipatnam, Ameerpet, Malakpet, Begumpet, Alwal, Bowenpally, Ganganagar, Barkatpura, Hastinapuram, Shalivahana Nagar, Moosarambagh, Babu Jagjivan Ram Nagar, Srinagar Colony, Ashok Nagar, Kavadiguda, Lower Tank Bund, Shivam Road, Raj Bhavan Road and others were submerged under the rain water.

For instance, residents in and around Bowenpally area had to face severe hardships as the Ramannakunta lake breached leading to flooding of sewerage water into their houses. Residents in the vicinity were forced to fend for themselves to drain out the rain water. The residents complained that the non-completion of lying of drainage pipelines was leading to the flooding of their houses which happened due to breach in the tank.

It was alleged that the tussle between the local authorities and the defence authorities was resulting in the non-completion of the laying of drainage pipelines which in turn was causing innumerable hardships to the residents during early monsoon.

Sharing his experience, K Ajay, a resident of Hasmathpet said that the overflowing sewerage water from the surrounding areas accumulated at the low lying basti.

“MLA came here two days ago like every year. We do not even have power in the area for most of the days which makes it more difficult to dry up the water in our houses” he said.

People living in the at Hasmathpet near Old Bowenpally next to Bon Cheruvu woke up to 2 feet deep sewerage water flooding into their houses.

General store owner Veeraiah from New Bowenpally said, “The rain water entered into our shop and a few rice bags got wet by the time we opened the shop we were shocked and it took more than an hour to clean the shop.”

Low lying areas in Begumpet worst affected As usual, Devnar School for the Blind at Begumpet has been submerged with the rainwater entering into the school.

Residents in the neighbourhood were directly releasing the sewer lines into the school subjecting the students to suffer. Even though it was brought to the notice of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation authorities, they remained indifferent.

Even after repeated complaints, the civic authorities have failed to rescue the visually impaired. Subbamma a resident of Begumpet said that the family has been draining out rain water since 3 AM on Thursday. She said that their family had a nightmare and urged the civic authorities to come to their rescue.
