Hyderabad: The mortal remains of veteran Congress leader and Rajya Sabha member Palvai Govardhan Reddy were consigned to flames at his native village Idikuda in Nalgonda district on Saturday. The Rajya Sabha member from Telangana State died early Friday after suffering a heart attack near Kullu in Himachal Pradesh.

He was 80. Reddy, who was accompanied by his wife, was going by car to Kullu to attend a Parliamentary committee meeting when he suffered a cardiac arrest. A five-time MLA in Andhra Pradesh before the bifurcation of the State, Reddy was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2012.

His body was brought to the state from the national capital last night and was kept in Gandhi Bhavan to enable party workers and the public to pay last respects to the veteran Congressman. Union Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya also paid homage to the departed leader.

Policemen presented a gun salute as the cremation was conducted with full state honours. People in large number gathered in the village to bid farewell to their beloved leader. Several politicians, including Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao, conveyed their condolences to Reddy's kin.
