Jnanpith awardee and noted poet C Narayana Reddy passed away today while undergoing treatment at Care Hospital in Hyderabad.

A renowned Telugu poet who also wrote songs for Telugu movies, C Narayana Reddy was born in a remote village of Karimnagar district on July 29, 1931.

Popularly known as Cinare, he was also felicitated with country’s third-highest civilian honor, Padma Vibhushan in 1992 and was honoured with the prestigious Jnanpith award in 1988 for his poetic work Visvambara that was translated in three other languages. He was also nominated to the Upper House of Parliament in 1997.

Considered to be an authority on Telugu literature, he had a MA and PhD in Telugu literature from Osmania University where he also worked as a professor.
