Hyderabad: Telangana and Andhra Pradesh government are set to lock horns over water sharing at a crucial meeting to be convened by the Union Ministry of Water Resources in the last week of June in New Delhi.

The secretary-level meeting would finalise water allocations from the Krishna river between the two states for this year. The Telangana state government has been demanding the Centre on its share in the Godavari waters as Andhra Pradesh had diverted it to Krishna through Polavaram/ Pattiseema projects.

The Telangana state is entitled to utilise 43 tmc ft of water in accordance with the Godavari Water Disputes Tribunal Award (GWDT), 1980. Top officials of the State Irrigation department told The Hans India that as per the final award of GWDT, 45 tmc ft of water can be utilised upstream of Nagarjunasagar project in the Krishna basin.

Augmented water from Godavari diversion may be utilised in the ratio of irrigation planned in the Krishna basin above Nagarjunasagar. It is (96:4) i.e. 25.6 lakh acres and 1 lakh acres in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh respectively. Hence, Telangana State is entitled for 43.2 tmc ft out of 45 tmc ft of water.

Officials said that for the last three years, Telangana deprived of 129.6 tmc ft of water due to the Centre’s failure in addressing the issue. Though the Union ministry had constituted an expert committee to address this issue, Andhra Pradesh government was obstructing the Centre from taking a final decision for last three years.

The TS government would also put the long-pending demand for allocation of 400 tmc ft of water before the Centre during the meeting. Telangana has been demanding allocation of 400 tmc ft of water out of the total 811 tmc ft earmarked for the undivided AP in Krishna.

It includes state’s original share of 299 tmc ft, 43 tmc ft for diversion of Godavari to Krishna delta and another 50 tmc ft as compensation for the excessive release of water by neighbouring AP for the last two years.

As per the AP Reorganisation Act 2014, the Union ministry has been entrusted to allocate water between two states every year until the Brijesh Kumar Tribunal addresses the issue permanently.

Officials said that Telagana would fight for its justifiable demands and also submit a detailed report on the utilisation of water allocated to the state last year in Krishna waters and increasing demand for water in the coming agricultural season.
