Hyderabad: The High Court at Hyderabad has directed the governments of Telangana State and Andhra Pradesh to specify the steps taken to curtail farmer suicides and provide relief to agriculturists in distress, especially loan waiver and other measures.

The division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Ramesh Ranganathan and Justice T Rajini gave the direction while hearing a batch of writ petitions filed seeking orders of the court to both the governments to take measures to stop the farmers’ suicides and provide relief.

The petitioners alleged that the governments had not taken any concrete steps to relieve the plight of the farmers. The arguments of the counsels for the petitioners and the Government pleaders took over one and half hour time.

The bench directed the two governments to file a report on the amount of farm loans waived. It also wanted to know the stand of the governments regarding constitution of the permanent agricultural commission and other recommendations made by the Swaminathan Commission. The case was adjourned by two weeks.
