Siddipet: Stories of corruption are emerging from Siddipet municipality, as municipal ward members seem to be making hay while the sun shines by accepting bribes for giving financial assistance to beneficiaries of Individual Beneficiary Housing Scheme of the Central government meant for letting poor people build their own house in the municipality’s limits.

For instance, take the case of Shankar, a salesman working in a medical store in Siddipet town and one of the beneficiaries of the housing scheme. His name figured in the list of beneficiaries in Ward Number 23. It is alleged that Satyanarayana Goud, the municipal ward member after collecting the commission from Shankar, has failed to sanction Rs 1.5 lakh for beneficiary to construct his own house. Repeated visits to the ward member’s house proved futile.

This year, motivated by ‘Badi baata’ programme, Shankar enrolled his daughters in a government school in Indiranagar. His daughters, who have been studying in Telugu medium before, have now been enrolled in English Medium. But even that had to come with a price, commission! He alleged that the headmaster of the school has demanded Rs 500 to enrol children into English medium.
