Hyderabad: The State government decided to set up a Task Force to control the menace of spurious seeds. The Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao, at a review meeting, directed the officials to constitute the task force team consisting of police, agriculture and cooperative department officials. It will also be making amendments to existing laws and will come up with an ordinance in the Cabinet meeting to be held on June 17.

The Chief Minister expressed anguish over continued instances of ‘spurious seeds’ being sold in spite of tough measures taken in controlling the menace. He said there was need for amending the PD Act so that tough action can be taken against the offenders.

For deterring the culprits from indulging in the illegal practice, he said besides amending the PD Act, there should be some other Act which will scare them from indulging in such activities.

The Chief Minister said there was a need for identifying those who regularly indulge in duping the farmers and the officials involved in such acts. Hence, there was a need for setting up a Task Force for conducting surprise inspections.

Chandrashekar Rao pointed out that these groups selling spurious seeds mostly targeted chilly and cotton farmers, mostly in Warangal, Khammam and Mahbubnagar districts, which must be controlled.
