Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has taken up plantation of 2.20 lakh saplings last year duringHaritha Haram programme out of which 90 per cent survival rate of the plants have been observed.

Of the 2.20 lakhs planted, 1, 86,370 plants survived and due to various reasons 24,000 could not survive. After the rains have started recently on the onset of monsoon this year, GHMC commissioner B Janardhan Reddy gave directions to the officials of Biodiversity wing to plant the remaining 10 per cent saplings again and the officials have taken up the plantation programme.

As per records, the survival rate is not more than 40 per cent. But due to the directions of Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister K Taraka Rama Rao and Mayor Bonthu Rammohan, the GHMC has taken up various measures to protect the plants providing sufficient water and duly constructing the fencing walls, involving various NGOs for the purpose.

The GHMC also planned re-visit day on every Friday fixing the responsibility to the NGOs , and also providing tree guards from the corporate companies as Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). The GHMC has taken up plantation of 24,000 saplings at the same places where they did not survive earlier.

The civic body, for this year Haritha Haram, has planned to take up massive plantation programme with the participation ofseveral corporate companies under CSR.
