Hyderabad: The Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department on Friday accorded an administrative sanction of Rs 230 crore to the improvement of bottle neck stretches of storm water drains in GHMC limits.
The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Commissioner B Janardhan Reddy directed the Engineering and Town Planning officials to expedite all the works pertaining to critical bottle necks over the nalas and to complete the entire exercise in the stipulated time.
Janardhan Reddy said the slum dwellers, poor people who are affected will be rehabilitated in JNNURM housing scheme at Shamshiguda and other places and for private and patta land owners compensation will be paid as per the rules.
He said the citizens should cooperate and also be socially responsible and appealed to the citizens to not throw the garbage / plastic bottles waste etc., in to the nalas as the material will cause obstruction to the free flow of water in nalas.
Earlier GHMC Commissioner B Janardhan Reddy had requested the government stating that due to continuous heavy rains in Hyderabad in September 2016 many parts in the city inundated and damages were caused due to insufficient carrying capacity of the existing storm water drains.
On the preliminary survey, 47 storm water drains with a length of 16.55 kms were identified for improvement, which will be taken up in stretches with bottlenecks before the onset of monsoon on priority basis to avoid inundation.
The government after examination of the matter had accorded administrative sanction of Rs 230 crore and also permitted to call tenders for the works of Rs 230 crore subject to condition to meet the expenditure from GHMC funds.
According to Voyants report on Storm Water Drains, Kukatpally Hydraulic zone is the most critical zone out of 16 zones, and 318 properties are affected in Kukatpally area alone out of 1,002 affected properties in bottle neck stretches in entire GHMC limits.
